33 Toy Australian Shepherds Rescued from Tumalo Property
![]() | ![]() ![]() | ![]() |
Thanks to neighbors’ tips, Deschutes County deputies recovered 21 more Toy Australian Shepherds hidden on an adjacent property owned by David De Persio, bringing the total number of rescued dogs to 33. Fifteen of the newly discovered dogs are puppies, now under the care of the Humane Society of Central Oregon. De Persio, already cited for felony animal neglect after an August 3 fire exposed poor living conditions, now faces an additional charge for interfering with deputies during the investigation.
Adoption Information
The Humane Society of Central Oregon is currently providing medical evaluations, treatment, and daily care for the 21 additional dogs and puppies from the latest seizure. Updated adoption information will be available soon. Anyone interested in adoption can visit HSCO at 61170 SE 27th Street in Bend or visit www.hsco.org for updates. Community members who want to help but are not able to adopt can make a donation to support the ongoing care of these dogs and others in need by visiting www.hsco.org.
Applications open for BPRD Naming Committee

Bend Park and Recreation District (BPRD) is opening applications to the Naming Committee. Five community members will be selected, and they will help name future parks, facility, and trail projects.
BPRD is welcoming members from underrepresented populations of the community and those who are familiar with the district and community.
The application is open through August 29th. The application questionnaire is available on BPRD's website.
Members selected for the committee would follow the naming process established by the board of directors in 2021. The committee would then pass along their recommendations to the board, who have the final say.
Madras and Jefferson County Launch Joint Strategic Planning Process

The City of Madras and Jefferson County have officially kicked off a collaborative strategic planning effort with their first joint work session held on August 11, facilitated by SSW Consulting and supported by the Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council. Local leaders reviewed demographic and economic trends, including rapid population growth, increasing diversity, and various regional challenges. They identified key priorities—economic development, housing affordability, health care access, emergency preparedness, infrastructure, and technology—while emphasizing the vital role of community input. Residents can expect to participate through surveys, stakeholder interviews, and public events in September and October, leading to a draft strategic plan to be developed in November and adopted by early 2026.
Redmond Unveils New Public Safety Facility with Community Ribbon-Cutting

Redmond celebrated a major milestone this week with the ribbon-cutting of its new 42,000-square-foot, two-story Public Safety Facility at 111 NW Teak Avenue. Funded by a $40 million voter-approved bond passed in 2022, the $49 million building is designed to meet the city’s growing public safety needs and will be fully operational by August 25. Featuring modern amenities like private meeting spaces for crime victims, a high-visibility area for custody exchanges, an emergency operations center, a training room, and officer wellness areas bathed in natural light and materials, the facility also includes EV charging stations and rooftop solar panels to align with LEED standards. Thanks to strong community engagement, careful planning, and collaboration among city leaders and contractors, the project was completed on time and more than $2 million under budget—highlighting both community trust and fiscal responsibility.(ktvz.com)

Fire Destroys Redmond Home, No Injuries Reported
![]() | ![]() |
On the afternoon of August 12, a Redmond home on SW 37th Court was fully engulfed in flames, with smoke visible from a distance. Fire crews arrived to find the blaze spreading to neighboring properties, prompting them to deploy a high-powered master stream to contain it. Fortunately, all residents and pets evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported. The fire’s cause remains under investigation, and Redmond Fire & Rescue thanked multiple local agencies for their assistance.
Hikers Rescued in Badlands After Running Out of Supplies

Two hikers were rescued Sunday after becoming lost and dehydrated on the Flatiron Rock Trail in the Badlands Wilderness Area. One hiker reported a medical issue, prompting a call to 911 around 2:39 p.m. Deputy Josh Westfall and 12 Search & Rescue volunteers responded, locating the pair about four miles from the trailhead. After receiving food, water, and assistance, the hikers declined further medical treatment and left on their own. Authorities urge outdoor adventurers to prepare properly for Central Oregon’s summer heat.

Bend Man Arrested for Animal Abuse

Freya
A 36-year-old Bend man, Kyle Jensen Strong, was arrested on August 9 after multiple witnesses reported seeing him hitting, dragging, and grabbing his brown Labrador, Freya, near NE Third Street and Olney Avenue. Although Strong denied the abuse, bystanders provided officers with video evidence. He was charged with second-degree animal abuse, and Freya was taken to an emergency veterinarian for injuries to her front paws. She will remain in protective care until transferred to the Humane Society.

Hey, I started a blog!
I’ve been wanting to do this for a while now — a place to share some of the best parts of life in Central Oregon: the trails, the food, the hidden gems, and the everyday stuff that makes living here pretty special. So, I finally pulled the trigger.
