Fire Destroys Garage/Shop Under Construction in Southeast Bend's Woodside Ranch Neighborhood

BEND, Ore. — A large garage/shop under construction was destroyed by fire Monday evening in the Woodside Ranch neighborhood, prompting a rapid response from Bend Fire & Rescue.

Crews were dispatched around 6:28 p.m. to the 21000 block of Ridgeview Drive East, where they found the detached building at the rear of the property fully engulfed in flames. Homeowners and neighbors had already jumped into action, using garden hoses and even a water truck from a local contractor to keep the fire from spreading before fire crews arrived.

Firefighters faced challenges in extinguishing the blaze due to the building’s size and limited access. It took about an hour to bring the fire under control.

Although the main house sustained only minor heat damage and the fire threatened a second detached garage, those structures were spared. Several nearby trees were scorched.

No one was inside the building when the fire broke out. Officials say the cause remains under investigation, and a full damage estimate has yet to be determined.

The following story is still unfolding and we will post updates as we are made aware of them.

Swift Water And K-9 Teams Lead Coordinated Search At Dillon Falls -07/28/25

Deschutes County, OR — Search and recovery efforts at Dillon Falls continued over the weekend and remain active this week, with specialized teams using a full range of professional tools and training.

On Saturday and Sunday, swift water experts worked in and around the Class 5 rapids, tethered to safety systems while navigating hazardous conditions near the falls. Professional divers conducted thorough searches downstream, and highly trained K-9 units were used each day to help identify areas of interest. Crews also deployed sonar, side-scan equipment, and drones to aid in locating clues from both above and below the surface.

K-9 teams were back in the field Monday, actively searching both sides of the Deschutes River. They play a critical role in these types of searches and are trained to detect human scent in and around moving water, helping to guide where search efforts are focused. Drones are being re-flown to gather updated aerial perspectives and identify any changes in the landscape that could support the search effort.

As opportunities present and areas to investigate are identified, swift water search crews continue working along the river’s edge, in some cases using technical rope systems and operating under strict safety protocols. The challenging terrain and dangerous currents require deep experience and coordination.

Search operations will continue using various resources within and outside the agency as appropriate and available. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to this mission and deeply appreciates the support of its partner agencies and the community.

The Sheriff’s Office remains in daily communication and is working closely with the victim’s family. They have fully supported the ongoing efforts by DCSO and our Search and Rescue teams. The family has requested continued privacy while search operations continue.

Two Hikers Rescued Near Chush Falls After Medical Emergency

SISTERS, Ore. — A coordinated rescue effort successfully aided two hikers near Chush Falls on Tuesday after they experienced medical issues while on the trail.

The incident occurred shortly after 11:15 a.m. when the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District was dispatched to the remote area south of Sisters. Due to the rugged terrain and limited access, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue (SAR) Unit was called in for support.

Eleven SAR volunteers responded and located both hikers on the trail. One was able to walk out under their own power, while the second was assisted out using a wheeled litter—a specialized stretcher designed for use on difficult terrain.

The multi-agency response included the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District, U.S. Forest Service personnel, and SAR volunteers from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. Both hikers declined hospital transport after being safely escorted to the trailhead.

Authorities praised the teamwork and swift action that led to a successful outcome and thanked all agencies involved for their dedication to public safety in Central Oregon’s backcountry.
