Fire In Closet Threatens Bend Area Home
![]() | ![]() |
Bend Fire & Rescue responded to a residential structure fire at 12:52 PM on Saturday, August 23 at 66135 White Rock Loop. No one was at home at the start of the fire and upon returning the Home Owner heard smoke alarms and saw smoke coming from various openings in the structure and proceeded to call 911.
On arrival Bend Fire & Rescue extinguished the fire containing it to a small closest on the second story of the structure. The fire cause has been determined to be a failure in the closet fluorescent lighting, spreading hot debris to combustibles below the light fixture. No injuries were reported at the scene.
Bend Fire & Rescue would like to remind everyone of the importance of working smoke alarms. Smoke alarms should be place on every level of your home (including the basement), inside each bedroom, and in the hallway outside each bedroom. Some newer style smoke alarms contain lithium-ion batteries and can be effective for up to 10 years. Additional information can be found on Bend Fire & Rescue website under “Community Programs”.

Subaru Found in Deschutes River — Police Investigating as Theft
Early Friday morning (Aug. 22), Bend Police were called to Riverbend Park after a passerby spotted a silver Subaru Outback partially submerged about 10 yards offshore in the Deschutes River—with its headlights still glowing beneath the water.
An officer swam out to the vehicle to check for any occupants, and medics from Bend Fire conducted a full search. Fortunately, no one was found inside.
Police say the 2022 Subaru is now part of an active theft investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact non-emergency dispatch at 541-693-6911.
Massive Illegal Marijuana Operation Busted Near La Pine
![]() | ![]() | ![]() |
On the morning of August 22, the Oregon State Police SWAT team and multiple partner agencies executed a search warrant at a property in the 11000 block of Cedarwood Drive, just south of La Pine in Klamath County. Authorities uncovered a sophisticated unlicensed marijuana extraction lab operated by 42-year-old Jacob Wayne Dondero, who was not present at the time. More than 4,000 pounds of marijuana, extracts, packaging materials, and cash were seized. The scope of the operation required two dump trucks and multiple trailers to haul away evidence, with help from the City of Bend’s Streets & Operations Division.
In addition to the illegal lab, law enforcement discovered four children living in hazardous conditions above the extraction site. The Department of Human Services removed the children from the home. Dondero faces charges including unlawful manufacture and possession of marijuana products, as well as endangering the welfare of a minor. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities ask anyone with information on Dondero’s whereabouts to contact non-emergency dispatch.
Camp Ex-Employee Arrested on Serious Sex Abuse Charges
Zackary James Perry, 29, was arrested in Portland on serious sexual assault charges, including rape, sodomy, and sexual abuse, but nonprofit Caldera Arts clarified he was not a camp counselor at Camp Caldera near Suttle Lake and that there is no evidence minors were involved. Perry, who had served as a Youth Advocate and Media Coordinator, was fired and reported to authorities after staff raised concerns. Caldera emphasized its strict safety protocols and background checks. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate and encourages anyone with information to come forward.
