🗳️ Petition Drive Aims to Put $4.3 Billion Transportation Tax on 2026 Ballot

REDMOND, Ore. — Volunteers with the “No Tax Oregon” movement gathered at sites across the state Saturday for a one-day petition event called “Sign Across Oregon,” including a Central Oregon hub at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds. Their goal: to collect over 78,000 signatures to place a proposed $4.3 billion transportation tax and fee hike on the November 2026 ballot.

Organizers emphasize that the petition is not just about opposing the tax—it’s about giving Oregonians the right to vote on it directly. Whether residents support or oppose the measure, signing the petition is a way to ensure it appears on the ballot for a public vote. Anyone who missed Saturday’s event can still find locations or request a petition to sign through the No Tax Oregon website.

🔥 $3.4M Grant Boosts Wildfire Prevention & Education in La Pine

LA PINE, Ore. — Deschutes County has secured a $3.4 million grant to help reduce wildfire risk in the high-fire danger areas of South County, with a major focus on the La Pine Rural Fire District. The funding will support efforts such as fuel reduction, public education, and evacuation route improvements.

One key outcome will be the creation of a new, permanent wildfire education and outreach position within the La Pine Fire District. “They would be that central contact for people to get homeowner assessments, learn about grants and education opportunities, and really help implement fire prevention projects,” said County Forester Kevin Moriarty.

The grant will also fund vegetation clearing along key roads to improve emergency access and evacuation. While funding is secured, Moriarty notes that projects likely won’t begin until late spring 2026 due to administrative processes still underway.

🎿 New Trail Signs (in Kilometers!) Coming to Virginia Meissner Sno-Park

BEND, Ore. — Cross-country skiers hitting the trails at Virginia Meissner Sno-Park this season will notice some updates. The Virginia-Meissner Nordic Club is installing around 80 brand-new trail signs across the Nordic ski and snowshoe area, replacing those worn out by winter weather and grooming machines.

In a shift toward global Nordic standards, the new signage will feature kilometers instead of miles. “The mileage markers are going away. Kilometer markers are going in—so get used to it, free skiing public,” joked board treasurer Peter Hall. The signs were handcrafted by students at Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis. If conditions allow, ski season is expected to begin December 1.

🎿 Mt. Bachelor Delays Season Opening Due to Lack of Snow

This morning - Top of Cloudchaser

BEND, Ore. — Skiers eager to hit the slopes at Mt. Bachelor will have to wait a bit longer. The resort announced it’s postponing its planned season opening due to minimal snowpack—just a one-inch base as of Friday. Typically, a 24-inch base is needed to safely begin operations.

“We don’t have sufficient snowpack to start the season next Friday,” said Communications Manager Presley Quon, noting that several storms in the forecast could help build the base. While snowmaking machines are in place, Quon added that ideal conditions are needed for them to run. Unlike last year’s early start, this season is off to a slower, drier beginning with no new opening date yet announced.

🚔 SWAT Called After Redmond Man Barricades Himself During Domestic Dispute

SWAT file image

REDMOND, Ore. — A tense early-morning domestic dispute led to a SWAT response and temporary evacuations at the Ochoco Trailer Park off O’Neil Highway near Cinder Butte. Just before 3 a.m. on Sunday, Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report involving 40-year-old Alvaro Perez-Cazarez, who barricaded himself inside a home and refused to surrender.

After repeated negotiations and support from the Redmond Police Department, the Sheriff's Office SWAT Team safely took Perez-Cazarez into custody. He was booked into the Deschutes County Jail on charges of coercion, unlawful use of a weapon, and menacing. Authorities thanked local residents for their patience and cooperation during the standoff.

🚨 Road Rage Incident Ends in Gunfire — Suspect Still at Large

BEND, Ore. — A road rage incident escalated into gunfire on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 23, near SE Third Street and SE Wilson Avenue in Bend. Around 1:45 p.m., a 19-year-old driver reported that his vehicle was shot by another motorist. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Bend Police responded and confirmed that a single round had been fired following a confrontation on SE Third Street.

The suspect remains at large and is described as a heavyset white male in his late 20s, with blonde hair and a beard. He was last seen driving a white compact SUV. Prior to the shooting, the suspect’s vehicle was reportedly speeding and made an unsafe pass near the railroad overpass at SE 3rd Street and SE Railroad Avenue. Investigators are asking anyone with dashcam or surveillance footage from that area to contact Bend Police Detectives via dispatch or reach out directly to Captain Brian Beekman at 541-948-1269 or [email protected].
