🚔 Prineville Man Arrested After Meth Bust, DUII Investigation A 65-year-old Prineville man is facing multiple charges after a Central Oregon Drug Enforcement (CODE) investigation led officers to seize roughly 1.5 pounds of methamphetamine during a traffic stop earlier this week. According to Prineville Police, officers stopped Rocky Lee Klein’s 1999 Toyota Tacoma on SE Juniper Canyon Road around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday following reports that he had been distributing large amounts of meth in the area.
During the stop, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office K9 Dozer alerted officers to the presence of drugs inside the vehicle. A subsequent search warrant uncovered methamphetamine, a scale, and drugs packaged for sale. Police also determined Klein was allegedly driving while impaired and arrested him on suspicion of unlawful delivery and possession of methamphetamine, along with DUII charges. He was booked into the Crook County Jail. ⛰️Bend 🎻 Bend Orchestra Teacher Performs on ‘Bridgerton’ Soundtrack A Bend-area orchestra teacher is gaining national attention after performing on music featured in Netflix’s hit series Bridgerton. The local educator, who teaches orchestra at two Central Oregon schools, contributed violin performances to the popular show’s orchestral soundtrack — known for transforming modern pop songs into classical-style arrangements featured throughout the period drama.
The musician said working on the internationally recognized series was both surreal and rewarding, especially while continuing to teach students locally in Central Oregon. Bridgerton has become widely known for its signature soundtrack, which blends classical instrumentation with covers of contemporary artists ranging from Taylor Swift to Billie Eilish Read more →
📚 Dudley’s Bookshop Opens Second Bend Location in the Old Mill District One of Bend’s longtime independent bookstores is expanding. Dudley’s Bookshop officially opened its second location Friday in the Old Mill District, bringing a cozy new bookstore experience to one of Central Oregon’s busiest shopping and recreation areas. The new shop sits near the Deschutes River Trail between Will Leather Goods and lululemon and arrives just ahead of the busy summer event and concert season in Bend.
Owners Tom Beans and Amy Rose say the new location has been years in the making and features a smaller, curated collection focused primarily on new releases, classics, Pacific Northwest titles, and staff picks. Unlike the downtown location, the Old Mill store will not initially include a café, but will feature patio seating and design elements built from reclaimed mill materials that honor the area’s logging history. 📷 Central Oregon Libraries Launch Trail Camera Lending Program Central Oregon residents can now check out trail cameras from local libraries as part of a new partnership between regional library systems, the High Desert Museum, and wildlife officials aimed at connecting people with the outdoors and local wildlife. The cameras are designed for noninvasive wildlife viewing and can help users capture photos and videos of animals moving through forests, backyards, and natural areas across the region.
The program is tied to the Oregon Wildlife Watch initiative, a community science effort that encourages people to observe and document wildlife activity responsibly. Participating libraries are lending the cameras for several weeks at a time, with SD cards and locks included, giving families and outdoor enthusiasts a chance to explore the hidden wildlife activity happening around Central Oregon. The initiative focused on empowering women through affordable housing and hands-on construction work while helping complete the final homes in the 13-home neighborhood. Habitat officials say 11 of the homes will go to women-led households, including several single mothers.
Volunteers worked alongside future homeowners on siding, trim, fencing, cabinets, and other finish work throughout the week. Habitat leaders say the energy-efficient homes are designed to provide long-term housing stability, with some projected utility costs averaging around $15 per month. Future homeowner Michelle described the experience as life-changing, saying the opportunity has made “dreaming much more possible.” Read more → 🐎Prineville 🕯️ Crook County Honors Fallen Officers During Memorial Ceremony Law enforcement officers, first responders, and community members gathered this week in Prineville to honor officers who lost their lives in the line of duty during Crook County’s annual Peace Officers Memorial ceremony. Conservation groups say restored sections of the creek corridor remained noticeably greener and less damaged compared to unrestored areas after the wildfire swept through portions of Whychus Canyon Preserve and Rimrock Ranch. The restoration work, completed over several years, reconnected the creek to its historic floodplain and created wetter meadow habitat designed to improve resilience for fish, wildlife, and the surrounding ecosystem.
Officials with the Deschutes Land Trust and partner organizations say the project may now serve as a real-world example of how habitat restoration can also help reduce wildfire impacts. The restored floodplain areas acted as natural fire breaks in some locations, helping vegetation survive while nearby unrestored sections burned much hotter. Whychus Creek restoration efforts have been a key part of long-term work to improve habitat for salmon, steelhead, and native wildlife throughout the watershed. Thistle & Nest announced Friday that $7.44 million in funding is now available to help qualifying residents purchase homes in Bend, Madras, and Prineville through a community land trust model designed to make homeownership more affordable. The program aims to assist middle-income buyers who may struggle to save for large down payments despite having steady incomes.
Program officials say the assistance can significantly reduce upfront housing costs while helping preserve long-term affordability for future buyers. The land trust model allows homeowners to purchase the home itself while the trust retains ownership of the land underneath, lowering purchase prices and helping create more attainable housing opportunities in Central Oregon’s increasingly expensive real estate market.
