Pacific Power Outages Spark Frustration Over Communication, Safety Balance

Bend, Ore. — A recent string of power outages in Bend has left thousands of residents in the dark — and some are now speaking out, not just about the inconvenience, but about a lack of transparency from Pacific Power.

Resident Mark Mariotti, who endured two two-hour outages in one week, voiced concern over what he sees as an imbalance in the utility’s response. “Maybe they’ve gone too far on the spectrum where they’re shutting off power when it really didn’t need to be,” he told KTVZ.

Pacific Power says the outages weren’t planned shut-offs, but automatic triggers from their enhanced safety settings — a wildfire prevention measure that cuts power when vegetation, wildlife, or wind interfere with lines in high-risk areas.

The utility says these safety systems are essential to protecting communities during fire season and notes that customers were emailed warnings earlier this year. Still, residents like Mariotti say the company’s automated responses and lack of timely communication leave them feeling unprepared and out of the loop.

Pacific Power says they’re working to reduce both the frequency and duration of these shut-offs while encouraging customers — especially those with medical power needs — to contact them for support programs.

As fire risk continues across Central Oregon, Pacific Power insists that safety remains the priority. But residents are calling for a better balance — and clearer communication — moving forward.

Five applicants for Deschutes County interim sheriff discuss agency’s future at union forum

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The union representing Deschutes County sheriff's deputies has released a list of five recommended applicants for the interim sheriff role to succeed retiring Sheriff Kent van der Kamp and they were invited to speak at a public debate Monday night.

The five listed by the Deschutes County Sheriff Employees' Association are: Deschutes County Undersheriff Aaron Wells; DCSO Detective and Special Services Commander Ty Rupert; DCSO Detective Lt. James McLaughlin; former DCSO Captain Deron McMaster; and COCC Director of Campus Safety and Emergency Management, Cory Darling.

As of Monday afternoon, a county representative said three people have filed statements of interest with the county: McLaughlin, Rupert and Wells. The deadline for filing statements of interest and other information is 5 p.m. on Friday, July 11, the county said recently in announcing the application process.

The public was invited to the informal debate at the Bend Elks Lodge. It was also livestreamed on YouTube by Connect Central Oregon.

While the union will make its recommendation, county commissioners will make the selection of who will serve as interim sheriff until next year's election.

Responding to complaints in forest challenging

Bill Bartlett | The Nugget Newspaper

Heated encounters between campers and long-term forest-dwellers in Sisters Country are drawing the attention of citizens and authorities. The Nugget received a communication recently from a camper describing a negative encounter — and frustration with the response:

“You really should call your local Sheriff’s department and ask about what they told us when we called 911 today about the homeless guy living out in the National Forest illegally in his RV off Harrington Loop Rd. He ran three other couples out of the forest yesterday calling them [sexual and racial epithets] and how this was his forest and we didn’t belong here.

“Today he did the same to us and when I stood my ground he threatened to ‘get his gun’ and shoot us and our dogs if we did not leave. We called 911 and they said they would send someone out. They then called back and said they would not send anyone out because they knew who he was and he was mentally ill and did not want to escalate the situation with him and possibly end up shooting him. They said they did not know if he is armed and that we should just leave to diffuse (sic) the situation.”

The Nugget asked Lt. Chad Davis of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office about the matter.

Dog rescued from 112-degree car in Bend; owner arrested

Central Oregon Daily News

BEND, Ore. -- A man was arrested after leaving a dog inside a car as temperatures neared 100 degrees Monday.

Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller confirmed officers responded to the call in the area of NW Kansas Avenue and NW Broadway Street sometime Monday afternoon.

The high temperature in Bend Monday was 97 degrees. Miller said officers measured the air temperature inside the car at 112 degrees when they got the dog out.

The owner was found inside the downtown Deschutes Public Library and was taken to the Deschutes County Jail on suspicion of second-degree animal neglect. The suspect was not identified.

The dog, a female German Shorthaired Pointer, was taken to the Humane Society of Central Oregon. HSCO said it appeared the dog was OK.

Below is a chart showing how quickly temperatures can escalate inside a vehicle on a hot day.

Cars and Coffee brings auto enthusiasts together twice a month in Bend

Central Oregon Daily News

BEND, Ore. -- Car owners and enthusiasts gather twice a month in Bend for Cars and Coffee, a relaxed community meet-up held at Dilly Dally Coffee on the first and third Sundays of each month.

Running from 8 to 10 a.m., the event is free to attend and open to all makes and models. Drivers are encouraged to bring their cars, grab a coffee, and enjoy conversation with others who share a passion for automotive culture.

More than 100 vehicles typically fill the lot, representing a wide range—from modern imports and performance builds to vintage classics, exotics and rally cars.

Organizer Aaron Hofferber says the event is about more than just cars; it’s about connection.

“It’s a great crossover of generations,” Hofferber said. “Hot rodders from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s really aren’t that different from today’s import tuners. We’re all just trying to make our cars a little more drivable and get out to have some fun.”

The next meet-up will be Sunday, July 20th, at Dilly Dally Coffee, 1001 SW Emkay Dr, Bend.

The Nugget Newspaper:

Trailgrams...Hand Lake Loop

Every now and then you just want an easy day on the trail, but you don't want to sacrifice scenic beauty. Hand Lake would be a good solution. It's close by - 20 miles up Highway 242 (McKenzie-Santiam Scenic Byway) - with much to see along the way. It's always fun to stop at Dee Wight Observatory, recently spiffed up.
