🔥 OSU Study Finds La Pine Faces Higher Wildfire Risk Than Previously Thought
A new study from Oregon State University is raising concerns about wildfire risk in La Pine, showing the area may be more vulnerable than earlier estimates suggested. Researchers found that when social and economic factors—like housing density, infrastructure, and community resources—are considered alongside environmental conditions, the overall risk level increases significantly.

The findings highlight how wildfire danger isn’t just about forests and weather, but also about how prepared a community is to respond and recover. As wildfire seasons grow longer and more intense across Central Oregon, the study underscores the importance of mitigation efforts, emergency planning, and community resilience—especially in areas like La Pine where multiple risk factors overlap. The study was published in the journal Environmental Research Letters. It can be accessed at this link.

🔥 Brush Fire Along Tumalo Road Quickly Contained by Crews
Fire crews from Bend and Redmond responded quickly to a brush fire that broke out along Tumalo Road between Valeview and 92nd on May 4. The fire stretched for hundreds of yards along the roadside, but firefighters were able to contain it to less than an acre before it could spread to nearby homes or vehicles. Several fences were damaged, but no structures were lost. Neighbors and passersby also jumped in early, using shovels and hoses to help slow the fire’s spread before crews arrived.

Investigators say the fire was likely sparked by hot debris from a passing vehicle—such as material from a failing brake or catalytic converter—igniting dry roadside vegetation. Officials note that fire season is arriving earlier than usual, with fuels already dry enough to catch fire. Drivers are being reminded to check vehicles and trailers for potential hazards, as even small sparks or heat sources can quickly ignite fires along roadways.

🏍️ Motorcyclist Killed in Head-On Crash on Highway 20 in Jefferson County
A 65-year-old man from Scio died Sunday afternoon following a head-on crash involving a motorcycle and a minivan on Highway 20 near milepost 81.5 in Jefferson County. According to Oregon State Police, the crash occurred around 4:17 p.m. when the motorcyclist attempted to pass westbound traffic, crossed into the eastbound lane, and collided with an oncoming Kia Sedona driven by a Bend woman. The rider was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries but died shortly after arrival.

The driver of the Kia sustained minor injuries, and a 14-year-old passenger in the vehicle was not hurt. The highway was impacted for about three hours as crews investigated the scene. Oregon State Police were assisted by Black Butte Police Department, Black Butte Ranch Rural Fire Protection District, and Sisters Fire Department.

🔥 Prescribed Burn Near Pine Mountain Brings Smoke Back to Central Oregon
Smoke is once again visible across Central Oregon as crews begin a prescribed burn near Pine Mountain, just southeast of Bend. The burn started Tuesday and is expected to continue through the week, targeting roughly 330 acres as part of ongoing efforts to reduce wildfire risk in the region. Residents across Bend, La Pine, and surrounding areas may see smoke from the operation, especially during calmer overnight and early morning hours.

Officials say the burn is intentional and carefully managed, but it will come with temporary impacts. Closures are in place around Pine Mountain, including Forest Service roads, the campground, and nearby recreation areas while crews complete the work and ensure safety. While smoke may affect air quality at times, especially in low-lying areas, the project is aimed at reducing the risk of larger, more dangerous wildfires heading into the warmer months.

🦅 Smith Rock Eaglet Draws Crowds of Photographers to Central Oregon
A young bald eagle at Smith Rock State Park is quickly becoming a local celebrity, drawing photographers and wildlife enthusiasts eager to capture rare images of the growing eaglet. The bird—nicknamed “Phoenix”—has been spotted in a nest perched high along the cliffs, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to witness and photograph the early stages of its life.

The surge in interest highlights both the popularity of Smith Rock and the excitement surrounding wildlife sightings in Central Oregon. Photographers have been gathering at safe viewing distances, hoping to catch glimpses of feeding, movement, and early flights. Wildlife officials continue to remind visitors to respect the animals’ space and follow viewing guidelines to ensure the eaglet—and its parents—remain undisturbed.

🚧 New Traffic Signal Planned for Redmond Intersection; Motorcycles Banned in City Parks
Redmond is moving forward with safety upgrades at a busy intersection, with construction of a new traffic signal at Northwest 19th and Maple expected to begin in June and be completed by the end of the year. The signal is aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion at what is currently a four-way stop, a location that has seen increasing traffic pressure as the city grows.

In a separate move focused on park safety, the Redmond City Council has approved a new ordinance banning “motorcycles” from city parks—defined as motorized or electric two-wheeled vehicles without pedals. The rule targets high-speed, pedal-less e-bikes that have sparked safety concerns, particularly in areas like Dry Canyon. Violators could face a Class B citation and a $250 fine, while traditional pedal-assist e-bikes will still be allowed.

🚦 Redmond Traffic Cameras Go Live May 15 with 30-Day Warning Period
Drivers in Redmond will soon notice new red light and speed cameras going live across the city, as officials launch an automated photo enforcement program aimed at improving traffic safety. The system officially begins May 15, but for the first 30 days, violators will only receive warnings as the community adjusts to the new enforcement tools.

The program includes multiple fixed cameras and a mobile unit placed at high-risk intersections and roadways to help reduce speeding and improve pedestrian safety. After the warning period ends on June 15, citations will begin being issued, with fines depending on the severity of the violation. Officials say the goal is simple: change driver behavior and make Redmond’s roads safer for everyone.

🦌 Sisters Students Take Learning Outdoors to Track Wildlife Near Highway 20
Students from Sisters High School recently took to the field near Suttle Lake to study wildlife activity along Highway 20, turning hands-on research into a real-world science experience. The group collected data on animal presence and movement in the area, contributing to a broader effort to better understand how wildlife interacts with one of the region’s busiest corridors.

The project is part of ongoing work to improve safety for both animals and drivers along this stretch of highway, which sees hundreds of wildlife-vehicle collisions each year. By helping gather baseline data on species and behavior, students are playing a role in shaping future wildlife crossing designs—an effort aimed at reducing collisions and improving habitat connectivity between Bend and the Suttle Lake corridor.
