🚦 Franklin Avenue Reopens with New Safety Upgrades

After months of partial closures and detours, a key stretch of Franklin Avenue in Bend reopened to full traffic this week with new safety features aimed at pedestrians and cyclists. The city’s project added separated bike lanes, updated crossings, and wider pedestrian space along the corridor.

City officials say the redesign is part of a broader effort to make Franklin safer and more consistent with the Midtown crossings vision — and more changes could be coming as additional segments move toward final design and construction.

🚧Olney Avenue closure to continue into January

The closure of Olney Avenue between Wall Street and Second Street is expected to remain in place into January. Crews are replacing aging water lines dating back to the 1950s as part of the project. The road is expected to temporarily reopen in late January.

🐴 Happy Trails Horse Rescue Earns Global Accreditation

Happy Trails Horse Rescue in Bend has received full accreditation from the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, a notable international designation tied to standards for animal care and organizational practices. The recognition followed a review process that includes an on-site evaluation.

The rescue says the accreditation is a milestone for the organization and a signal to supporters that the nonprofit is meeting high benchmarks while continuing its work caring for horses in need across Central Oregon.

🚨 Deputies Seek Information After Cow Killed in Open-Range Crash

The Crook County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help after a cow was struck and killed by a vehicle on NW Lone Pine Road in an open-range area north of Prineville. Deputies took the report on December 27, and investigators believe the collision happened the night before, sometime between 9:00 and 10:00 p.m., along the stretch of road between NW O’Neil Highway and NW Smith Rock Way.

Because the animal was left deceased at the scene, authorities are hoping someone may have seen or heard something that could help piece together what happened. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Lt. Mitch Madden with the Crook County Sheriff’s Office at 541-447-6398 and reference case number 25-1171.
