👶 Child Care Facility Under State Investigation After Serious Allegations

A Bend child care center is under intense scrutiny as the Oregon Department of Early Learning and Care investigates numerous allegations of mistreatment, neglect, and improper discipline at Mia’s Sprouts Early Child Development Center. Former employees, parents, and a grandparent have come forward describing disturbing incidents ranging from unsafe feeding practices and overfeeding to inappropriate discipline and lack of supervision. Some parents say the experiences left lasting emotional and developmental impacts on their children, contradicting the facility’s claims of offering “the highest quality daycare.”

The state’s investigation has widened after multiple reports dating back months were not acted on, prompting renewed attention and a new investigator now assigned to the case. Families and former staff say they’re relieved to see movement but remain concerned about how earlier complaints were handled. Mia’s Sprouts declined to comment, and state investigators continue working through a growing list of allegations. Read the full story for an in-depth look at the claims, interviews, and timeline of the ongoing investigation.

🐕‍🦺WaK-9 Therapy Dog Teams Earn Certification, Ready to Serve Central Oregon

BEND, Ore. — Smiles, tail wags, and a big milestone marked the weekend for WaK-9 Training, as eight handler-and-dog teams officially completed their certification as therapy animals on Sunday. The testing, held at Bend Transitional Care, was conducted by the Alliance of Therapy Dogs and qualifies the new teams to begin visits to hospitals, assisted living centers, and schools across Central Oregon.

WaK-9 Training founder William O’Daniel launched the program earlier this year after seeing a growing need for therapy dog services, particularly in underserved areas like Jefferson and Crook counties. “The passion comes from putting smiles on people’s faces,” O’Daniel said. “That’s the true payment.”

The newly certified teams are eager to get to work. Handler Adrien Towle shared that the program has become a personal passion: “It gives me something to work toward—always improving, and bringing light into health care settings.” Anna Tracy, who completed certification with her 16-month-old pup Princess, said she’s proud to see her young dog thrive in a role that taps into her natural instincts to comfort others.

🔫 UPDATE: Suspect Arrested in Bend Road Rage Shooting

Bend Police have arrested 19-year-old Bend resident Saxton James Deaton following an intensive investigation into a non-injury shooting that occurred during a road rage incident on November 23. At about 1:40 a.m., members of the Central Oregon Emergency Response Team, along with Bend Police detectives and officers, executed a search warrant at Deaton’s home on Butler Market Road. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Deschutes County Jail on suspicion of attempted first-degree assault, menacing, and unlawful use of a weapon.

The incident happened around 1:45 p.m. near SE Third Street and SE Wilson Avenue, where a 19-year-old driver reported that another motorist fired a gun into his vehicle. Although the victim was not injured, investigators found that a single round had been shot into the car following a road rage escalation. The suspect’s vehicle, described as a white compact SUV, was initially seen speeding southbound on SE 3rd Street and making an unsafe passing maneuver near the railroad overpass. The case remains active as detectives continue their work.

🚨 DCSO Arrests Washington Man in Online Child Exploitation Case

Redmond, OR — Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office deputies have arrested 33-year-old Daniel James Mayfield of Sedro-Woolley, Washington, after a lengthy investigation into online child exploitation. Investigators say Mayfield believed he was communicating with a 14-year-old girl and traveled to Deschutes County with the intention of engaging in sexual activity with the minor.

Detectives, digital forensics investigators, SWAT members, and the U.S. Marshals Service coordinated a planned contact with Mayfield at a location off Rimrock Way in Redmond, where he had arranged to meet the juvenile. He was taken into custody without incident. A search of the scene uncovered additional evidence, and Mayfield now faces charges of Luring a Minor, Online Sexual Corruption of a Child in the First Degree, and Attempted Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree. The investigation is ongoing.

Bend Fire & Rescue is kicking off its annual Holiday Food Drive, running now through December 12th. Community members are encouraged to drop off non-perishable food items at any Bend Fire station to help support local families facing food insecurity this season. High-need donations include canned fruits and vegetables, soups, peanut butter, dried grains and pasta, and pantry staples like honey and sugar. All donations will go to NeighborImpact and be distributed through their network of food pantries, shelters, and meal sites across Central Oregon.

Collection bins are placed outside all Bend Fire & Rescue stations, including Simpson Ave., Hamby Rd., Jamison St., Country Club Dr., Tumalo, and Pilot Butte. In addition, Bend Fire’s beloved Santa Express will roll through local neighborhoods December 5, 6, and 8, gathering new toys, warm coats, and non-perishable foods. ⛽ Pipeline Outage Nudges Oregon Gas Prices Ahead of Thanksgiving Travel

Gas prices in Oregon are holding relatively steady ahead of the holiday rush, though the statewide average has ticked up slightly to $3.82 per gallon—up three cents from last week. The increase follows a temporary shutdown of the Olympic Pipeline earlier this month after a leak was discovered near Everett, Washington. BP, the pipeline’s operator, says one of the two major fuel lines has now been safely restarted.

While the disruption triggered emergency declarations in Oregon and Washington, the impact at the pump has been minimal so far. AAA expects gas prices to resume their seasonal decline as repairs continue. Nearly 1.2 million Oregonians are expected to hit the road this Thanksgiving. Read more for the full forecast, fuel trends, and what’s driving West Coast prices.
