What natural feature near La Pine created Oregon’s largest concentration of freshwater springs? |
Correct Answer: C) Newberry Volcano
Expanded Answer:
The massive lava flows from Newberry Volcano created underground aquifers that feed dozens of cold-water springs around La Pine, including the headwaters of the Deschutes River. This geology is why the La Pine area has such lush wetlands compared to surrounding high desert.

🔥 Mint Storage Warehouse Fire Contained in Crook County

Crook County Fire and Rescue crews responded Tuesday evening, December 23, to a large commercial fire at Core Botanica on NW Lone Pine Road in Crook County. Firefighters were dispatched around 7:15 p.m. after reports of a significant blaze in a mint storage building. Upon arrival, crews found the approximately 36,000-square-foot warehouse fully involved, with millions of pounds of shredded mint leaf stored inside and awaiting processing.

Firefighters immediately shifted to defensive operations, focusing on protecting nearby structures. Those efforts were successful, and no other buildings on the property were damaged. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Redmond Fire & Rescue and the Crook County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene as crews worked to contain the fire and manage safety concerns.

Investigators later determined the fire was accidental, caused by spontaneous combustion of wet mint inside one of the large storage bins. Due to the sheer volume of organic material involved, officials say the site is expected to continue smoldering and producing smoke for several days, though there is no ongoing threat to the public.
🔥 Garage Fire Tied to EV Battery Prompts Safety Warning

Bend Fire & Rescue responded to a garage fire on NW Terra Meadow Drive just before 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve, where a lithium battery failure in a gas-converted electric vehicle sparked a blaze. Thanks to fast action by neighbors and a quick response, firefighters were able to contain the fire to the garage. The two adults and three dogs inside the home escaped safely, and most of the family’s Christmas presents and belongings were spared. While the home sustained smoke and utility damage and is currently uninhabitable, no injuries were reported. Neighbors were briefly asked to shelter in place due to toxic smoke from burning lithium-ion materials.
Officials are using the incident as a reminder to always stop charging immediately and seek professional help if any EV component malfunctions. They’ve shared key tips from the U.S. Fire Administration on EV charging safety—including using certified equipment, avoiding extension cords, and never disposing of lithium batteries in household trash. Improper disposal of these batteries can lead to serious fires, even at landfills.
✈️ Plane Crash Near Pole Butte Claims One Life
A tragic plane crash in a remote area of Lake County claimed the life of 66-year-old Jeffry Scott Gorman on Tuesday morning. Gorman was piloting a small aircraft from Susanville, California, to Salem, Oregon, when the plane went down near Pole Butte, south of Silver Lake and west of Summer Lake. He was the sole occupant and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A dog that was also on board initially survived the crash but had to be humanely euthanized due to severe injuries. The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the cause of the crash.

🐾 Farewell, Robbie McDougal: Beloved Therapy Dog Retires After 20,000+ Comforting Visits

After a remarkable career bringing joy and healing across Central Oregon, Robbie McDougal, the 11-year-old Golden Retriever therapy dog, has officially retired from service. His last day at St. Charles Health System was December 10, capping off more than 20,000 visits to patients, staff, and families. Known for his calm demeanor, gentle eyes, and golden coat, Robbie became a comforting fixture at hospitals, schools, and even Redmond’s Roberts Field airport — a steady presence through both crisis and calm.
Robbie began his career young, entering the Asante health system at just 19 months old — the youngest ever to do so — before joining St. Charles in 2019. From psychiatric units to Same Day surgery, Robbie’s work touched countless lives, with hospital staff praising his unique ability to bring peace even in the most emotionally difficult spaces, like Medford’s 2 North behavioral unit. He also served as a “Tail Waggin' Tutor,” helping children struggling with reading find their voice through nonjudgmental companionship.
Bred for temperament by Foxfire Goldens in Petaluma, California, Robbie has always been more than a dog — he’s been a partner in healing. Though now graying and a bit arthritic, his spirit remains playful. He’ll spend retirement doing what he loves: walking the woods, splashing in ponds, and snow bathing to his heart’s content.
His handler and companion, Bill Bartlett, was with him through every paw step of this journey. Central Oregon — and the countless hearts he warmed — will never forget Robbie McDougal. 🐶❤️ https://www.nuggetnews.com/story/2025/12/24/news/robbie-mcdougal-retires/38571.html

"'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse..."
I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a joyous holiday season, however you choose to spend these days before the start of a New Year.
The Central Oregon housing market is chugging along this season, with buyers harboring visions of sugar-plums dancing in their heads. The national average this morning for a 30-year fixed-rate conventional mortgage is down to 6.21%, six basis points lower than recent levels, and nearly 100 basis points lower than at this time last year. Inventory levels throughout the region are very slightly higher than last year at this time, and notably, our weather is exceptionally mild. All of these factors are combining to create a perfect scenario to keep real estate activity brisk.
Single-family homes listed in Deschutes County decreased by 29 to 900. For reference, the low point of 2025 occurred in early February when the inventory hit 750. Unlike the frenetic period between early 2020 and late 2022, when levels bottomed out at less than half of today's levels. Fifty-two homes are pending this week, up eleven from last week. Sixty-one transactions closed, averaging $978,110, up two from last week, with the sold-to-original-list price ratio at 92.95%.
Crook County's inventory of single-family homes decreased by 3 to 163. On Christmas Day last year, there were 155 single-family homes listed. Three pending sales are four fewer than last week, with four closed transactions averaging $525,756 and a sold-to-original-list price ratio of 92.24%.
Jefferson County's inventory rose to 127 for the third time in the past five weeks, up two from last week. On Christmas Day last year, there were 99 single-family homes listed. One pending sale occurred this week: listing for twelve days at $365,000. Six transactions closed, averaging $443,900, with the sold-to-original list price ratio at 94.47%. The pace of new listings relative to sold properties in Jefferson County is keeping the inventory remarkably stable. It isn't often that real estate achieves a truly balanced market, but Jefferson County has done just that in the last half of this year.
Starting 2026 with mortgage interest rates stable and considerably lower than in 2025 creates stability in the Central Oregon housing market not seen since 2019. The crazy amount of relocation that occurred during the pandemic years, followed by an unprecedented rise in mortgage interest rates not seen in the last decade or more, seemed to keep the housing market out of balance. Healthier levels of supply combined with stable mortgage rates have calmed the markets, which, in the long run, is good news.
I am available for anything you need over the holidays, and I am grateful to all my past, present, and future clients! I strive to provide information to help you navigate the Central Oregon housing market, wherever you are in the process, and no matter which side of a transaction you are on. Merry Christmas!

☕ Thump Coffee and Backporch Coffee Join Forces to Brew a Stronger Future

Thump Coffee and Backporch Coffee are officially merging into a long‑term partnership under the new parent company TBC Coffee beginning January 1, 2026 — but community members shouldn’t expect big changes at their favorite local cafés. Both brands share a deep commitment to quality coffee, community, and hospitality, and the merger is designed to strengthen those values, not alter them. Customers will still enjoy the same neighborhood locations, beloved drinks, and familiar baristas they’ve come to know, as the companies continue to operate with minimal impact on daily routines. (Thump Coffee)

The decision to join forces comes from years of parallel growth and shared goals, with leadership saying the collaboration will build a steadier, more supportive foundation for both teams. Behind the scenes, the merger will improve operational support, create more opportunities for staff, and enhance long‑term stability — all while both brands retain their unique identities for now. Leaders emphasize that nothing about the customer experience will change right away, and any future updates will be thoughtfully communicated well in advance. (Thump Coffee)
If you have questions about what this means for your coffee stops or subscriptions, both cafés encourage you to reach out — their doors and inboxes are open. (Thump Coffee)
📈 Downtown Redmond Booms with 9 New Businesses in 2025

Redmond’s downtown district is thriving, with nine new businesses opening their doors in 2025 across food, retail, and service sectors. According to the Redmond Urban Renewal Agency, downtown occupancy currently sits at 91%, marking the third consecutive year above the 90% threshold. Officials credit the area's growing diversity and support programs for drawing in entrepreneurs and helping businesses flourish.
New additions include Kooki, a bakery and café; Don Gabino’s Mexican Grill; boutique and gift shop Little & Luxe; Dry Canyon Arts Gallery; and service spots like Brandlab print shop, The House gym, Mana Folly game room, Pawfect Harmony Pup Spa, and Smith Rock Tattoo. In 2025 alone, the Urban Renewal Agency partnered with 11 small businesses, investing $110,000 in grant and loan incentives—an effort that leveraged nearly $1 million in private investment. 🏡 Habitat for Humanity Secures Land for New Mixed-Income Housing in SE Bend

Bend-Redmond Habitat for Humanity has officially closed on the Stone Creek Commons property, purchasing the surplus land from Bend-La Pine Schools for $20,000. Located next to Silver Rail Elementary School, the site will become a new mixed-income homeownership community aimed at supporting working families — with priority given to school district employees.
Awarded through a competitive RFP process in 2024, the project marks a collaborative effort to address Central Oregon’s housing crisis. Habitat’s CEO Carly Colgan called the move “a major step forward” in creating pathways to homeownership near where local educators live and work. The upcoming neighborhood will feature 18 energy-efficient townhomes, ranging from 2 to 4 bedrooms, with private yards and garages, and is designed for households earning up to 80% and 120% of the area median income.
Construction is set to begin in early 2026, with homes expected to be available by 2027–2028. Applications will officially open in fall 2026, but potential buyers are encouraged to begin mortgage readiness efforts now. A second Habitat project near Summit High School is expected to follow in 2026.

📉 Target Faces Activist Investor Pressure Amid Sales Decline, Reuters Reports

Dec 26 (Reuters) - Target is facing pressure from hedge fund Toms Capital Investment Management, which has made a significant investment in the retailer, the Financial Times reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Shares of the company were up 1.5% after the news. The stock has lost about 26% of its value this year.
The Minneapolis-based retailer has posted three straight quarters of falling comparable sales and is betting on incoming chief and longtime company executive Michael Fiddelke to revive growth, as the business faces pressure from strained household budgets and tariff uncertainties.
Meanwhile, rival Walmart has gained market share with its focus on cheap groceries and household essentials, coupled with fast doorstep delivery.
"As part of our robust shareholder engagement program, we maintain a regular dialogue with the investment community. Target’s top priority is getting back to growth...," Target said in a statement to Reuters.
Target has plans to spend an additional $1 billion in 2026 on new store openings and remodels. It has also cut 1,800 corporate roles as part of a broader restructuring.
Earlier this year, Toms Capital had built a stake in Tylenol maker Kenvue before its sale to Kimberly-Clark last month for $40 billion.
Toms Capital did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
