🚨 OHA Warns: Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning This Winter

As cold weather sets in and Oregonians turn up the heat, the Oregon Health Authority is urging residents to stay vigilant about the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. CO is an invisible, odorless gas produced by burning fuel—and during winter, risks spike due to sealed-up homes and increased use of wood stoves and heaters. Symptoms of CO exposure include headaches, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and in severe cases, unconsciousness or death.

To stay safe, OHA recommends annual inspections of wood stoves, chimneys, and vents, and stresses the importance of proper ventilation. Never use outdoor heating or cooking equipment—like grills or generators—indoors. Install CO alarms on every floor, test them monthly, and replace batteries twice a year. If an alarm sounds or symptoms appear, get fresh air immediately and call 911. Learn more at OHA’s Carbon Monoxide Safety Page.

🛒 Farewell Market Opens in Southwest Bend

A new chapter begins in Brookswood Plaza as Farewell Market softly opened its doors over the weekend, bringing natural and health-focused groceries back to Southwest Bend. The store fills the space formerly home to C.E. Lovejoy’s, which closed in February after 15 years of serving the community.

Originally scheduled to open in late November, the launch was delayed as owners worked to curate the best possible selection and experience for future shoppers. Now open, Farewell Market aims to become a fresh local favorite.

🖼️Bend's Red Chair Gallery closing as owner heads for retirement

The Red Chair Art Gallery in downtown Bend will be closing in January after 16 years.

The gallery, located on NW Oregon Avenue at NW Bond Street, will close on January 2 after one last community art walk. The owner of the gallery says she's going to retire, but the staff is grateful for the support and enthusiasm over the years.

While the doors are closing, community members can still reach the artists on the Red Chair Gallery's website.

🚗 4-Vehicle Crash Causes Traffic Backups on Highway 97 Near Bend

A four-vehicle crash during Monday afternoon rain showers caused major traffic delays on U.S. Highway 97 just north of Bend. The collision happened around 3:30 p.m. near milepost 133, prompting a temporary closure of all lanes as crews worked to clear debris and assist those involved.

ODOT warned drivers to expect delays and urged caution around the scene. While some lanes were opened to allow limited traffic flow, the highway wasn’t fully cleared and reopened until around 5:15 p.m. No injuries were immediately reported.

🔫 Workplace Dispute Sparks Shooting and Chase in Sisters

A workplace dispute turned violent Tuesday morning when a man entered Spoons Restaurant in Sisters and shot a former colleague in the face with a non-lethal Saber pistol. According to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect — 31-year-old Kristopher Kirkpatrick — posed as a customer before opening fire at close range using pepper ball and rubber bullet ammunition. After chasing the victim through the restaurant while firing additional rounds, Kirkpatrick fled in a truck headed toward Bend. Deputies quickly responded and ended the pursuit with a PIT maneuver near Plainview Road.

The victim was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, including facial swelling and bruising from the projectiles. Detectives said Kirkpatrick’s actions demonstrated intent to kill, despite the weapon not using traditional bullets. No other injuries were reported, and authorities believe the victim was specifically targeted. The investigation remains ongoing.

🚓 Kidnapped Child Rescued After High-Speed Pursuit Through Central Oregon

A 9-year-old child reported kidnapped out of Multnomah County was safely recovered Tuesday night after a dramatic, multi-agency vehicle pursuit that stretched from La Pine to Redmond. The chase began around 8:00 p.m. when Oregon State Police attempted to stop a vehicle driven by 46-year-old Charity Carter of La Pine, who refused to pull over and led officers on a dangerous, erratic drive through multiple communities.

Deschutes County deputies joined the pursuit, which ended in Redmond after Carter struck multiple law enforcement vehicles and civilian cars before spike strips and a PIT maneuver brought her to a stop near Hemlock Avenue on Highway 97. Despite Carter’s efforts to evade capture—including ramming five police vehicles—the child was rescued unharmed and has since been reunited with their custodial parent. Carter faces a long list of charges, and authorities say more may be added. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

💙 Honoring a Legacy: Whitney Eskelson’s 15 Years of Impact Inspires New Youth Empowerment Fund

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Bend is celebrating a full-circle journey of service and inspiration by honoring Whitney Eskelson’s 15-year legacy with the launch of the Whitney Youth Empowerment Fund. This special fund will help local families access club programs that provide steady support, belonging, and opportunity — values Whitney has championed since childhood.

Whitney’s story is rooted in the Club itself. As one of the first kids to walk through the doors when the Bend location opened, she found more than after-school care — she found mentors, friends, and a place that felt like home. What began as a source of stability became her life’s calling. After college, Whitney returned as a staff member and worked her way up from Youth Development Professional to Program Director, and now serves as Vice President of Program Strategy and Operations.

Her leadership has touched countless lives. She created new opportunities, like the Club's cheer program, to help kids build confidence and community. Club parent Shereene Wray recalls Whitney’s compassion during a challenging time: “She helped my three kids feel safe and cared for… I will always be grateful.” Alana Johnson, a former Club kid turned staff, said, “Whitney is the heart and soul of the Club… she inspired me to embrace what’s unique and use it to take on the world.”

The new Whitney Youth Empowerment Fund will carry her spirit forward by removing financial barriers and opening the door to programs that empower youth in Central Oregon every day. Supporters are invited to give in honor of Whitney’s 15 years of service — even just $15 a month can help a child in need find their footing, just like Whitney did.

“Whitney has left a legacy here at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bend,” said CEO Michael Baker. “She is proof positive that the Club works.”
