Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Joins "Click It or Ticket" Campaign

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office will take part in the national “Click It or Ticket” seat belt enforcement campaign from May 19 through June 1. Deputies will use federally funded patrols to educate drivers about seat belt and child car seat laws, including Oregon’s 2017 law requiring children under age two to ride in a rear-facing safety seat.

Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death for children ages 1–12, with car seats and boosters shown to significantly reduce injury and death risks. In 2022, nearly 1,700 children were injured in Oregon crashes—16% were not using proper restraints.

In 2023, nearly half of the nearly 24,000 passenger vehicle occupants killed in the U.S. were not wearing seat belts. Buckling up remains the single most effective way to stay safe in a crash.

For help with car seat installation or selection, visit nhtsa.gov/equipment/car-seats-and-booster-seats#inspection-inspection.

Animal Welfare Investigation Ongoing at West Coast Game Park Safari

COOS COUNTY, Ore. – A multi-agency investigation into animal welfare conditions at West Coast Game Park Safari near Bandon continued Friday, with animal care teams conducting a full inventory and forensic assessment of the animals onsite.

Veterinarians and staff from the Oregon Humane Society, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Oregon Department of Agriculture have been evaluating the animals’ physical health, food and water supply, sanitation, and overall care. Animals determined to be in need of specialized treatment will be transported to accredited care facilities.

During initial assessments on May 15, one camel suffering from multiple serious medical issues was humanely euthanized due to its grave condition.

The operation stems from a long-term criminal investigation into the park’s practices, including potential violations related to animal care, permitting, and business operations. Multiple agencies, including the IRS and Oregon DOJ, are involved.

The park remains closed to the public during the investigation. Authorities urge the public to stay away from the area while law enforcement and animal care teams continue their work.
