House Fire in SE Bend 11/10/23

Media Release:
At 5:59 pm on November 10, 2023, Bend Fire & Rescue was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 60637 Devon Circle. Initial reports were of a fire in the kitchen that was spreading. Upon arrival, fire crews found that a neighbor had knocked down a majority of the fire with a dry chemical fire extinguisher. The rest of the fire was quickly extinguished, with fire damage limited to the kitchen range and cabinets but smoke damage throughout the residence. Damage is estimated at $20,000 to the structure and $10,000 to the contents. The residents of the home, four adults, three children, and a dog, were assisted by Red Cross.
Upon investigation, the cause of the fire was determined to be cooking oil spilled on a hot stove burner, which then ignited. The fire then spread to nearby combustibles and the kitchen cabinets.
According to the US Fire Administration, cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Always watch what you are cooking, never leave cooking unattended, and keep handles on pans turned toward the back of the stove. Bend Fire and Rescue Annual Coat Drive - Ends November 17th
Bend Fire and Rescue Annual Coat Drive is underway, beginning this Friday, October 27th, and going until November 17th. Fall is now in full effect and with winter slowly creeping around the corner, many are starting to prepare to bundle up.
This year we are focusing on the need for childrenβs coats due to the increased demand within our community. Last year's coat drive brought to light the overwhelming need that children are experiencing during the cold weather season. This year, as you transition to warmer clothing, consider decluttering those bulky winter coats your children no longer wear, and help the community keep underprivileged children warm as the temps continue to decline.
We are accepting new or slightly used jackets, hats, and gloves. If you are donating a slightly used item, please make sure it is recently washed.
Large blue bins will be outside the front door at all six of our Fire Stations, including our Westside Admin Building.
For contactless drop-off, donations can be dropped off at your nearest Bend Fire Station and placed inside the labeled bin outside anytime between Friday, October 27th, and November 17th.

Successful Search and Rescue Mission in Maury Mountains Ensures Safe Return of Missing Hunter
Maury Mountains, Crook County, 11/12/2023

In a successful search and rescue operation on Sunday evening, Crook County Search and Rescue (SAR) located an 82-year-old male hunter who had gone missing near Arrowwood Loop Rd in the Maury Mountains. The incident was reported to Crook County 911 at approximately 6 pm when the hunter failed to arrive at the designated location after the hunt.
The reporting party, unable to locate the missing individual, expressed concern as the elderly hunter was not responding to honking vehicles or other attempts to signal his whereabouts. The man, unprepared for an overnight stay in the woods, prompted a swift response from Crook County SAR.
Fifteen SAR members, equipped with off-road gear and two side-by-sides, including a newly acquired vehicle on its inaugural mission, responded to the emergency. Additionally, two search dog teams were dispatched to aid in the search efforts. Despite efforts to ping the missing hunter's phone yielding no useful information, the SAR team quickly mobilized to the Maury Mountains.
Upon arriving in the area, SAR members established a communication plan at the Emergency Operations Center. A search plan was devised based on the last known location of the hunter, with the search dog teams taking the lead. The successful coordination resulted in the swift discovery of the elderly man, who was found alive though weary and tired.
The rescue team transported the hunter back to the command post using the side-by-side vehicle, where he was joyfully reunited with his party. Crook County SAR emphasized the importance of preparedness in mountainous environments, urging individuals to equip themselves for potential extended stays. Accidents can happen, and proper preparation can be the difference between a memorable adventure and a tragic outcome.
Crook County SAR expressed gratitude for the successful mission and reminded the public to remain vigilant and prepared when venturing into the great outdoors. The group hopes the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and preparation in outdoor activities.
Bend Endurance Academy Gets a New Climbing Space!

The Bend Endurance Academy recently showcased its new youth climbing facility during an open house event, catering to children from 7 to college age.
The nonprofit organization transitioned from using a commercial climbing facility to having its dedicated space, aiming to create a safer and more welcoming environment for youth.
The open house included introductions to the coaching staff, information about available programs, and lessons on Boulder 101. Executive Director Mike Rougeux highlighted the organization's focus on providing alternative physical outlets for kids who may not thrive in traditional team sports, with offerings such as biking, Nordic skiing, and rock climbing.
In 2022, Bend Endurance Academy engaged over 1,000 participants, spanning from 2 to 74 years old.
Bend seniors riding e-bikes on forest trails expect rules to change soon
In Central Oregon, attitudes toward e-bikes on mountain trails differ from those on city streets. Despite a ban on e-bikes on U.S. Forest Service trails, riders like Phil Meglasson, a key figure in Bend's mountain biking scene, anticipate rule changes. Advocates, including seniors like Meglasson and Erich Ryll, emphasize the benefits of e-mountain bikes for older riders. Concerns about safety and environmental impact have prompted discussions on potential rule adjustments, with a preference for allowing pedal-assisted e-bikes on select trails. A forum hosted by The Bulletin and the City Club of Central Oregon will further explore the e-bike debate.

Todayβs Local Spotlight is The Central Oregon Veterans Ranch

The Central Oregon Veterans Ranch restores purpose and spirit to veterans of all ages and eras of war. Veterans share a bond. They understand the inherent sacrifices of their service, ranging from realities of war to the post-military service impact on physical, social, emotional, spiritual, and cognitive aspects of health. We donβt take the freedoms secured by these sacrifices lightly. Perhaps the most profound of these sacrifices: moral injury and the loss of innocence.
Our innovative, strengths-based approach is centered on social determinants of health and building community among a diverse population with high rates of disability, post-traumatic stress, chronic self-isolation, socioeconomic instability, and behavioral health challenges. Many of these individuals live in rural communities where access to care and support is limited. The welcoming support of peers experienced at The Ranch reduces self-isolation and loneliness and fosters belonging and feelings of being understood, proven protective factors against the risk of suicide, which tragically remains at 17 veterans every day in the US (US Department of Veteran Affairs, 2022).
We use the platform of a working ranch to draw veterans together in a natural setting around a common purpose: caring for animals, the land, ourselves, and each other. This unique approach promotes organic healing in a setting where nothing is forced or prescribed. Veterans discover a new sense of identity and purpose as they build relationships, find support, learn new skills, and meaningfully contribute to a new mission. There is an innate trust formed because our programs exist outside of the traditional clinical health support system. We use T.R.U.S.T. as an acronym to define our core values of Teamwork, Respect, Unconditional Support, Stewardship and Transparency.
We draw veterans from across the vast rural footprint of Central Oregon, with a focus on Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook Counties. Participants cover a wide age spectrum: from their 20βs-50βs from recent engagements in Afghanistan and/or Iraq, to Gulf War, Vietnam, and Korea era veterans in their 60βs-90βs. The multi-generational warrior camaraderie built around non-stigmatizing peer-driven agricultural programs create authentic connections and rekindle a sense of trust and belonging often lost after leaving the military.
