🌋 Mazama Energy Breaks Record with World’s Hottest Geothermal System Near La Pine

LA PINE, Ore. – A cutting-edge geothermal project on the flanks of Newberry Volcano has made international headlines. Mazama Energy announced Tuesday that its pilot site east of La Pine has reached a record-breaking 629 °F, making it the world’s hottest Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) ever developed.

The breakthrough marks a major milestone in the race for affordable, carbon-free energy — particularly for powering high-demand systems like AI and data centers. Backed by Khosla Ventures and Gates Frontier, Mazama aims to scale up to a 200 MW project at Newberry, unlocking deep-Earth heat for 24/7 clean power. 🌍⚡

 👮Commissioners Tour Deschutes County Jail

The Board of County Commissioners recently toured the Deschutes County Jail as part of an official inspection required by Oregon law.

Commissioners Patti Adair, Phil Chang and Tony DeBone joined Sheriff Ty Rupert and jail staff for the walkthrough. The group toured living areas, medical and mental health spaces, reviewed sanitation and safety practices, and observed the care, supervision and discipline of the adults in custody

“It was great to see the Sheriff’s Office working with pride and keeping the facility in excellent shape,” said Commissioner Chair Tony DeBone. “You can feel the spirit of service here. People in custody are stable and well cared for, and staff manage the jail with each person in mind.”

Oregon law designates county commissioners as the official jail inspectors. If commissioners see problems or signs that laws are not being followed, they are required to notify the District Attorney.

🚛 Log Truck and Semi Crash Shuts Down Highway 20 East of Bend

BEND, Ore. – A crash involving two semi-trucks, including a loaded log truck, temporarily closed U.S. Highway 20 near Rickard Road on Tuesday morning. The collision occurred around 8:30 a.m., according to Oregon State Police, when one truck slowed to turn left and was struck by the other.

🚨 Thankfully, only minor injuries were reported, but the highway was closed for nearly two hours as crews responded and cleared the scene. Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash.

🚧 Pilot Butte Summit Road Closing for the Season Nov. 2

BEND, Ore. – The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department will close the summit road at Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint to motorized vehicles beginning at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2. This annual seasonal closure helps prevent accidents due to slick winter conditions and will remain in effect through mid-April 2026.

🚶‍♀️🚴 The road will stay open to pedestrians and non-motorized users year-round, though park officials urge caution as winter weather can create slippery conditions. For updates or more info, visit the Pilot Butte park page.

🔥 Rural Bend Home and Trailer Destroyed in Fire; Woodstove Ash Disposal Under Investigation

BEND, Ore. – A devastating fire north of Bend destroyed a home and adjacent trailer late this week, prompting a multi-agency response from Bend Fire & Rescue, Cloverdale Fire, and Alfalfa Fire Districts. The blaze broke out at a manufactured home at 65295 76th Street, with 911 callers reporting the structure fully engulfed in flames.

When crews arrived, they found both the home and a nearby camp trailer on fire. With the support of water tenders from Cloverdale and Alfalfa, firefighters were able to prevent the flames from spreading to other buildings on the property. Despite their efforts, the house and trailer were declared a total loss, and three vehicles sustained significant damage. Estimated losses for structures, vehicles, and contents total approximately $200,000.

The home was unoccupied at the time, but residents in a nearby trailer saw flames through their window, quickly called 911, and evacuated safely. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, though officials are looking into the possibility of improperly disposed hot ash from a woodstove.

As colder nights return, Bend Fire & Rescue reminds residents to take precautions with wood burning. Key safety tips include:

  • Have your chimney professionally cleaned at least once a year to avoid dangerous creosote buildup.

  • Always dispose of fireplace ash in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. Ash can stay hot for days and reignite unexpectedly.

  • Place ash containers on a non-combustible surface until completely cool—never dump ash in trash cans or plastic bins.

🚨 Man Rescued After 30-Foot Fall at Sawyer Park

BEND, Ore. – A man suffered life-threatening injuries after falling approximately 30 feet from a cliff into the Deschutes River canyon at Sawyer Park late Monday morning. Bend Police responded around 11:07 a.m. after a 911 caller spotted the man at the base of the cliff, injured and unable to move. Officers reached the victim and provided care until Bend Fire & Rescue and Deschutes County Search & Rescue arrived.

The rescue team successfully lifted the man from the canyon just after noon, and he was transported by ambulance to St. Charles Bend. The victim has not yet been identified, and the incident remains under investigation. Bend Police thanked both fire and SAR crews for their swift assistance.
