11 dogs from alleged neglect cases adopted Friday from Humane Society

Eleven dogs from recent neglect cases in Deschutes County were adopted Friday, including poodles that were just made available for new homes.

People lined up outside the Humane Society of Central Oregon Friday morning for a chance to adopt one of the more than 40 poodles surrendered in an alleged puppy mill case in Alfalfa. Some of the poodles and Toy Aussies from another alleged neglect case were available at Ruffwear's warehouse sale in Bend.

In all, eight poodles, three Toy Aussies and one cat were adopted Friday.

Concerned about the recent high-profile animal neglect investigations happening around Deschutes County, animal welfare advocates are gathering for a first ever forum on the State of Animal Welfare.

Companion Animal Medical Project is hosting the event October 14 at Silver Moon Brewing in Bend. There will be an adoption event 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. followed by the community discussion 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. The event is free, but registration is required at this link.

🔥Deschutes County Lands $3.4M Grant for La Pine Wildfire Mitigation Project

Deschutes County has secured a $3.4 million federal grant to fund wildfire mitigation efforts in the La Pine area. The USDA Forest Service’s Community Wildfire Defense Grant will support a five-year project aimed at reducing fire risk, educating residents, and improving emergency access within the La Pine Rural Fire District.

“This was one of just 58 projects nationwide to receive funding,” said County Forester Kevin Moriarty. “These dollars will help our community better prepare for, respond to, and recover from wildfires.”

Key elements of the project include:

🌲Fuel Reduction:
– Treating 585 acres of county land near homes, businesses, and infrastructure
– Improving 100 miles of county roads for emergency access

🏡Community Support:
– Offering chipping and defensible space programs annually
– Providing defensible space funding for 125 senior and low-income properties in the Upper Deschutes River Communities

📚Education & Outreach:
– Hiring a full-time Fire Prevention Coordinator at La Pine Fire District
– Hosting two annual workshops on defensible space and home assessments

🧰Tools & Resources:
– Investing in modern fire mitigation equipment, including an air curtain burner and masticator head

The project is a partnership between Deschutes County and local organizations, including the La Pine Fire District, Upper Deschutes River Communities, Deschutes Soil & Water Conservation District, and others.

Jefferson County Fire & EMS Relocates HQ Amid Budget Crisis

Facing a severe budget shortfall, Jefferson County Fire & EMS is relocating its administrative headquarters from Madras to Culver to cut construction costs while renovations begin at the Madras Fire Station. Fire crews will remain stationed in Madras, and emergency response times are not expected to change—but residents may notice delays in administrative services like burn permits. The move takes effect October 6 and is expected to last through early 2026.

The district, formed by a 2024 merger of the fire district and EMS, has been grappling with a financial crisis tied to Medicare and Medicaid billing delays—compounded by a national data breach. The union says the district is already $242,000 in the red, just two months into the fiscal year. With over 2,000 EMS claims still unpaid and a $1.5 million revenue gap looming, more cuts may be coming. Chief Jeff Blake, who helped lead recent cost-saving measures, will step down November 29.

Fatal Crash on Highway 22 Claims Life of Redmond Man

An 85-year-old Redmond man was killed late Tuesday night in a single-vehicle crash near Idanha on Highway 22.

According to Oregon State Police, the crash occurred around 11:00 p.m. on September 30 near milepost 59. Investigators say the driver, Richard Wayne Braxling, was traveling westbound in a silver Chevrolet Silverado when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the road and rolled over. He was the only occupant and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The highway remained open during the investigation. Idanha-Detroit Fire District, Lyons Ambulance, the Marion County Medical Examiner’s Office, and ODOT assisted OSP at the scene.

Climber Walks Away After Fall at Smith Rock’s Monkey Face

Smith Rock’s Monkey Face (climber IS NOT pictured)

A climber who reportedly fell as much as 60 feet at Smith Rock State Park on Friday afternoon managed to walk away without serious injury.

Redmond Fire & Rescue responded just after 3 p.m. to a call near the iconic Monkey Face rock formation. While initial reports indicated the climber had fallen several dozen feet after coming off the end of his rope, he was soon reported to be awake, alert, and walking on his own.

Deschutes County Search and Rescue volunteers were dispatched but turned around before reaching the scene after learning the climber was declining medical care and making his way out under his own power.

“It was the best-case scenario, given how far the climber fell,” said DCSO Public Information Officer Jason Carr.

No official incident report was filed since the rescue was canceled and no medical transport was required.
