End of an Era: Prineville’s Oldest Barbershop Closes After 41 Years

Monte Gibson, left, and Jack White, in front of Monte's Barber Shop on North Main Street. (Ramona McCallister, for the Central Oregonian)

Prineville, OR - After more than four decades of serving the Prineville community, Monte Gibson has officially hung up his clippers. The town’s longest-running barbershop quietly closed its doors last month, marking the end of an era for generations of locals who sat in Monte’s chair not just for a haircut, but for connection, laughter, and friendship. On one warm September afternoon, Monte and fellow barber Jack White gave each other one last trim, reminiscing over stories shared within those well-worn walls. Monte, now 77, is retiring for health reasons after 57 years behind the chair — 41 of those in Prineville, where he built a beloved shop known for its straight-razor cuts, practical jokes, and deep community roots.

Barbering runs deep in Monte’s blood — his father, uncle, grandfather, and brothers all worked the trade. From a childhood in Burns to barber school in Portland and eventually to buying his Prineville shop in 1984, Monte’s legacy was shaped by family, hard work, and heartfelt service. He’s cut hair for five generations of some families, visited customers in hospitals and homes, and always made sure clients felt more like friends. “You just do things for people,” he said. “You know your customers, and they become like friends.” Though his shop is now closed, Monte’s presence — and the stories from that little chair on North Main — will long be remembered in Prineville.

Toddler Drowns at Unlicensed Crook County Daycare; State Investigation Underway

Oregon childcare officials are investigating the tragic death of a toddler who drowned last month after reportedly falling into a small livestock water trough at an unlicensed daycare in southeast Crook County. According to the Crook County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews responded to a 911 call on September 9 after the child was found unresponsive. Life-saving efforts were initiated at the scene before the child was transported to St. Charles Prineville and later flown to OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, where he sadly passed away.

The Oregon Department of Early Learning and Care confirmed that the daycare was operating illegally without a state license and has since launched an investigation. Licensed childcare providers are required to make all water sources—such as troughs, ponds, and creeks—inaccessible to children and must maintain constant supervision when water is nearby. Officials say findings from the investigation may later be published on the state’s Child Care Safety Portal. A GoFundMe has been established to support the boy’s family with medical and travel expenses.

Warm Springs Man Sentenced in Child Exploitation Case

A 25-year-old man from Warm Springs, Leonard Polk, has been sentenced to over 11 years in federal prison and 10 years of supervised release after pleading guilty to coercing and sexually exploiting a 15-year-old girl. According to federal prosecutors, Polk met the victim through Snapchat in December 2024 and used both Snapchat and Facebook Messenger to solicit explicit images. He later brought the teen to his home on the Warm Springs Reservation, where the abuse continued. Polk was arrested in Washington in January 2025 after the FBI was alerted he had transported the girl across state lines.

Federal investigators say the case underscores the dangers posed by predators who use social media to exploit minors. U.S. Attorney Scott Bradford stated, “If you target children in our community, we will use every resource at our disposal to protect them and ensure you are held fully accountable.” Anyone with information about child exploitation is urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit tips online at tips.fbi.gov.
