Grab your coffee — here’s what’s happening around Central Oregon. 🚨Traffic & Public Safety 🚦 Mother, Two Young Children Hit While Crossing Bend Intersection A 21-year-old mother and her two children, ages 1 and 5, were taken to the hospital Tuesday after they were hit by a vehicle at Reed Market Road and Third Street in Bend. Police said the family was crossing Third Street with the right of way when a 48-year-old Bend man, turning right from Reed Market onto southbound Third Street, struck them at low speed.
All three suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was cited for failing to yield to pedestrians, and some lanes were closed for about an hour while investigators reconstructed the crash. The intersection is one of three in Bend equipped with a red-light camera, although police said it was not immediately clear whether the westbound-facing camera recorded the collision. Read more → ⛰️Bend 🦅 Juvenile Golden Eagle Returns to the Wild After Rehab A juvenile golden eagle is back in the wild after being rehabilitated by Bend-based wildlife hospital Think Wild. The young raptor had been brought in with injuries and spent time in the organization’s care before being cleared for release.
After treatment and rehabilitation, the eagle was able to return to its natural habitat — another successful release for the local wildlife rescue and rehabilitation team. Read more →

🏫 Redmond Proficiency Academy Opens Expanded Forest Building Redmond Proficiency Academy has opened its expanded Forest Building in downtown Redmond, adding more space to the charter school’s downtown campus.
The expansion gives RPA additional room for students and programs as the school continues operating in the heart of Redmond. The newly expanded building is now officially open. 🚧 Automatic Gates Go Live at Finley Butte Sports Complex Automatic gates at La Pine’s Finley Butte Sports Complex are going live this week. Through October 1, the complex is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with the gates closing automatically at 10 p.m. and reopening the following morning.
Anyone still inside after the gates close will need to call the non-emergency dispatch number posted on signs near the gate to be let out. Winter hours begin November 1, when the complex will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Read more →
🚚 Truck Hits Power Pole and Fence in La Pine A Midstate Electric truck crashed into a power pole and went through a fence onto private property on Finley Butte Road in La Pine Sunday morning. Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies responded around 10:51 a.m. The male driver, who was alone in the Ford F-150, was taken to St. Charles Bend with minor injuries. No other vehicles were involved, and deputies said drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors.
Portions of Finley Butte Road and Wheeler Road were closed for several hours while deputies investigated and Midstate Electric crews assessed the damage and made the area safe. The roads have since reopened, although crews are continuing work in the area. The crash remains under investigation. Read more → 📰Deschutes County 📚 Deschutes Public Library Goes “Transparent” in September Deschutes Public Library is turning the idea of transparency into a full month of free programs with its September “Know Transparent” series. The lineup includes everything from decluttering tips and fiber art to creative writing, Shakespeare, music and spoken-word poetry.
Programs are scheduled throughout September at the Central, Redmond and La Pine libraries, with options for adults, teens and families. Highlights include “Clear the Clutter,” a two-part look at Julius Caesar, teen fiber-art classes, suncatcher making and the reflective music-and-poetry program “Gratitude, Loss and the Liminal.” Some programs require advance registration.
